VHS Tapes from the 2000s

I was just cleaning my place and went through a box of free stuff I picked up a couple of years ago. It had some VHS tapes including some from the 2000s. For me it is kind of odd to see things like The Animal and Scary Movie 2 on VHS. In the DVD bargain bin on Walmart sure, but on this media it really hits home that 2000 really was 20 years ago!

I remember around this time they really tried to bulk up VHS tapes since they were starting to die out as DVDs took over. They’d even squeeze on as many of the DVD extras as possible without overloading some. For instance I remember they did that with The Nutty Professor 2: The Klumps. It had a bunch of trailers (nothing new there for VHS tapes), but also a pretty lengthy behind the scenes thing, a Janet Jackson music video, and maybe some other stuff.

Anyway, just a random thread about VHS tapes from this era. Any thoughts? Do you have any?

from 2000-2012 I lived in a flat that basically backed on to a Blockbuster store. sadly they always had the blandest, most safe selection imaginable. and tried to coax you into buying not just ice cream popcorn and coke with every rent, but at one stage started trying to get you to top up your mobile phone credit as well (unless I dreamed that?)

Off topic, but speaking of Dudley Moore anyone know if there are any cheap widescreen DVD or Blu-ray releases of Arthur 2? I know they sell an Arthur/Arthur 2 double feature DVD, but both films are in full screen

Ah, the late 90's and early 2000's...AKA my halcyon childhood years

That is something I have noticed about older DVD releases. They always had extra features even if it was an older or relatively obscure/low budget release. Even if the features were little more than the trailers, TV commercials, or trailers and commercials for similar movies from that studio, it'd always be there.

By the time Blu-Ray came out in 2008-2009, DVD's with bonus features were a lot more rare outside of "special collector's editions" or early DVD releases that were still in print.

I'd think that streaming would make it even more of a rarity, but then again I've also heard some of the more major releases on DVD and Blu-Ray are including special features again to help keep sales up in the age of streaming.

I think the reason why so many DVD releases from the tail end of the 90's and the early 2000's had all those extra features was to get more people to switch over to DVD from VHS.

The blu-ray can be had at amazon for $19, or from the amazon marketplace for $14

As for VHS tapes from the 2000s, when I bought my first DVD player in 1998 I pretty much abandoned VHS. I think we still did a few tape rentals until the early 2000s but I haven't actually bought any tapes anymore once I switched to DVDs. I sold most of my original vhs collection at flea markets in the mid 2000s.

I don't think I had anywhere nearby that still sold VHS by 2000 and the format never had the same place in my affections that say, vinyl records have so I wasn't going anywhere to seek them out.

I still saw a few video rental stores and dollar stores in my area that sold VHS tapes in the early 2000's and even the local Wal-Mart and Kmart still had a small selection of VHS tapes for sale as late as 2004 but I lived in a very poor and rural area as a kid.

I have a VHS tape from 1979 of the HUMAN MONSTER (1939) and it starts out with a promo- "Welcome to the world of home video !"  and " for the low price of $49.99" you can own a washed out scratchy version of a public domain movie!  
I still have a good working player, too.

Cool, $14 is pretty good. I mean Arthur 2 isn’t that great, but Arthur is. And I’m only going to buy each movie once. So I’d prefer widescreen since I’ll probably watch Arthur at least a few times :)

I’m kind of surprise no one else here has said they still have a VCR and collect VHS tapes yet.

The only thing holding me back right now is space. It’s another reason I can’t wait to become a homeowner. But as I alluded to in the OP I still have some VHS tapes. I’d love to get a VCR again and track down all kinds of obscure crap that never made DVD. Plenty of bad and obscure stuff is out there!

Also lol at the $49.99 price tag. I was thinking about that too. Back in the 1980s it was common you could get a tape that had ONE episode of a show on it. So like that’s less than 30 minutes of content in some cases. I don’t remember the prices and know some were even giving away at one point as VHS tapes became more common place. But I wouldn’t be surprised if some of these less than 30 minute tapes sold for $20+ initially (in 1980s money). Now you can go on Amazon or eBay and find plenty of DVDs that have 24+ HOURS of content that sell for less than $10

RC was the guy I was replying to. By saying I was kind of surprised here has said they collect them I was referring to RC as the exception. As mentioned I don’t collect any currently in part due to my lack of space

another thing I like about vhs is the picture quality. I don't mean when you get those fuzzy white lines going across the screen, but stuff just looks better on video IMO.

all these super hi-def 24 carat gold plated whatever bluray remaster things often make old 70s and 80s films look weird to me.

it's like the same logic as saying that turning the treble up to max on a guitar amp will automatically make everything sound better. no, sometimes guitar tones sound better muddy
