Per a website called "The Ringer":

https://www.theringer.com/movies/2021/1/25/22244344/cult-movies-ranking-top-50

Not a terrible list--I never heard of a couple of them, but I guess they're culty in their home countries. I noticed one big snub, though. Anyone else see what I think is missing?

Not the one I was thinking of, no, though I would have thought it would make it. I'd never seen (or heard of) La Haine or Paid in Full. I've heard of (but never seen) Stranger than Paradise, Empire Records, Clue, Event Horizon, Super Troopers, The Raid: Redemption, Idiocracy, Slap Shot, They Live, The Thing, Office Space, or Wet Hot American Summer. I wish I'd never seen MacGruber. Can't remember if I've seen Bloodsport, probably saw some of it and got bored (I've seen Van Damme and it was all over cable in the 90s).

Of the ones you haven't seen, I'd recommend Akira, Hedwig, The Warriors, Repo Man, and Spinal Tap as the best.

I've seen animes before Akira and couldn't get into them. It's like some people don't dig musicals or some other genre. Mine is anime. I don't hate it but I've been avoiding.
I held Hedwig on DVD in my hands when it was first released to disc. I almost blind bought the movie but at the last minute replaced it with another. I'm still open to watch Hedwig some day. Me and The Warriors go back a long time. I've seen bits and pieces on TV but never the whole thing. For some reason I'm not very Interested in watching it, but I know I should. I've seen The Wanderers and enjoyed it so, there ya go.
Back in rental days Repo Man did nothing for me based on the VHS box art and description on the back. The same goes for Spinal Tap, except I did rent Spinal Tap on tape once but fell asleep watching. I've read all about Spinal Tap and Repo Man over the years yet I can't get myself to track these movies down.

I'm with you on anime.

That's the one I noticed missing! Looks like they didn't consider anything made before the 70s.

You should see SHOWGIRLS. You owe it to yourself as a bad movie fan. I also bet you'd like BIG LEBOWSKI more than you think you would.

CLUE
SLAP SHOT
Those are "cult" movies?

The BIG LEBOWSKI is a great movie.
LABYRINTH is the movie with DAVID BOWIE as the "king" of goblins - it's amusing.

I agree to certin point about the movies on the list

I'm not sure how many can actaully be called cult movies, but there are some there

They give three rules: movies that qualify "(a) were not successful at the box office, (b) were not widely and initially praised by critics, and (c) gained popularity only after they left theaters, whether by word of mouth, midnight screenings, or home-video success." CLUE qualifies, I think (I was surprised to find out it was now popular with some folks after hearing about how much it sucked at the time). I guess SLAP SHOT qualifies, I have no idea how it was received at the time, but it does seem kind of popular now.

The time span seems real narrow.
If your going to post a list- at least learn about the  history of the subject at hand.

Agreed. How can you make a list of cult movies, and not include Tod Browning/Bela Lugosi?

Bloodsport.

MacGrubber

The Raid: The redemption

Paid in Full

La Haine

....

What this list is missing is...

Better off Dead

Shadey (1985.. super obscure film even to this day)

 The young Poisoner's handbook

and probably a few more..but eh.  Good list.
