I remember a few years back, one of the promos for an X-men movie showed the villian choking a woman and people were all up in arms about it. 

I mean, he's the bad guy.  He's supposed to do bad things.  You can't make women look stong in movies if they're never in any danger.  People don't consider Sarah Connor a badass just because she looks good in a tank top and shades.  It's because she's actually able to take a beating and stand up to something that was trying to kill her. 

It's also one of the reasons why so many people didn't like Captain Marvel or Rey from Star Wars.  It never felt like they were in any real danger.  Things were too easy for them.
