A few nights ago I dreamed I couldn't sleep, so I got up and took a walk in our woods, heading alone to the overlook to throw pebbles into "the dark vast" as Samuel Beckett said, and in my dream I started smelling a strange burned plastic chemical smell, sickening and strong, and then there was an awareness in the dream that my body was found in the morning at the bottom of the overlook.

Thinking about that now because I can't sleep and I feel pulled to go alone to the overlook and throw pebbles out into space.

Never, including the year I was away in Turkey for the holidays, has it seemed less like the Christmas season. The feeling is just not there.
