In March, the store [The Lucky Evening Food Store], located in the 8900 block of South Braeswood, and property owners were hit with a common nuisance lawsuit by the city.
Because there's been a significant number of crimes nearby. (Sigh.)

I hate stuff like this; it's like major cities in the U.S. have decided Anarcho-Capitalism is the best form of government. It's not; Anarchy would only ensure the richest folks have protection.  Bluesad

What are they expecting the businesses to do?

In other cases, the cities expect the business owners to hire guards.

Problem is, these businesses are usually in poorer areas; I doubt the owners can afford guards. And even if they could afford guards, what could the guards do? Could a security guard walk up to someone & say "Hey! What did you hand him? Are ya'll trading drugs!?" What about violent crime? Is the security guard supposed to somehow take weapons away from people in the area?

And what are the city taxes for, if not for the police & fire department & roadways? And most cities charge you whenever they have to send out police. Where did that money go?

^ I have never lived in a city that charges you money for calling the cops. Mostly because no such thing exists.

Hmmm. Some cities do charge if someone makes more than a certain number of “non-emergency” calls. This includes the city I work in, & I assumed it was the same most places.

Here’s an article about the practice, discussing the reasoning behind it & potential negative fx:

 ^ That bill hasn't passed.
It's not a happening thing at this time.

If you call the cops with a false report, or for some dumb s**t- of course you'll be charged.

A similar law passed in my state this year....
Need to know your local non emergency number, because a few things are no longer considered emergencies, such as domestic violence....
Shortage of manpower as a few woke mayors decided to downsize their police forces following The Floyd Riots....

Come to to think of it, one of the hitpieces on George Zimmerman had to do with him getting in trouble for calling 911 to much.
