His notorious personality aside, what do you guys think of John Ford as a director?

One of the best directors to come out of Hollywood!  MY DARLING CLEMENTINE (1946) is my favorite Western by the man who made the best.

Aside from his grumpy persona (some co-workers said this was actually an eye blind as Ford was supposedly a big softy) he was a brilliant filmmaker and creator of some of the most memorable images in cinema history.

One of my fave director interviews is the one Peter Bogdanovich did with him.  TeddyR TeddyR

I've heard he more than once had John Wayne in tears over his lack of service in WW2 and used to berate him on set about it. I've heard that similarly, James Cameron was known as the nastiest man in Hollywood for how he treated his actor/actresses on set.

He did make some good movies though and few other directors made Wayne look as good on the big screen.

Looks like the only things he directed that I've seen are The Grapes of Wrath, The Searchers and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.

That's certainly not enough to be an expert on John Ford, but I really like those 3 fimls.

I disagree with his politics and many of his ideas about filmmaking, but the man made some incredible movies: They were expendable, The searchers, The horse riders, Two rode together, Cheyenne Autumn...

Due to the horrifying nature of this film, no one will be admitted to the theatre.

David Lynch plays John Ford in "The Fablemans": best part of the movie by far.
