I'm curious as to how any of these kind of releases can possibly hope to break even, let alone make money?

Knowing some local production companies as I do, I think most of the films made were either funded by tax breaks or subsidies beforehand.  Wink

Sometimes people will invest money in a film designed to lose money as a tax write-off.

You'd be surprised. Make them cheaply enough and you can break even. The two movies I worked on both had budgets in the low five digits. I'm not privy to the financial sheets, but get them on Tubi and a few other places and I bet they break even.

ok well, whatever works, I guess?

as a random comparison (to another area of the entertainment industry), any musician/band can pretty much make an entire album in their bedroom these days. the software etc. is all available... with movies you need so many more people involved, so much more time, so many more factors. still surprises me tbh. but fair play to them

The direct to video marked has always been for the most part profitable during its haydays. A good example would be Warners first direct-to-video release Rest Stop (2006)

Quote
It was a relative success on video, with close to $5 million in domestic video sales at retail according to The Numbers.

$5 million in sales in the U.S. only. Add rentals, TV rights and worldwide retail/rental/distribution and I bet Warner made quite the money off of Rest Stop.

I always thought the same about stuff like the one put out by The Asylum, until I read that they recover the investment in three months and they've never lost money so far. There's audience for everything I guess.

5 mil, not bad. wow , who are the losers actually paying their hard earned cash to watch this stuff? they should really... uh, ...post on here !

I'm not a fan but Asylum has a kind of recognisable brand name and readymade fanbase (at least it seems that way to me?)
