Please Help Me! Title of Movie?

I got referenced to this sight from someone because they said maybe someone could help me figure something out. Okay, I am 16 now, and maybe around 10 years ago I saw a movie. I CAN'T remember the title of the movie and was wondering if ANY of you had clues or could help me. Anyway I only remember fragments of it. OKay, there is some sort of monster under a lake, because it always bubbles up a whole bunch in certain spots. People never really see it. Somehow a little boy is tied in with it, he is trying to figure out what it is or somehting. I remember a scene where either he drowned or a friend of his drowned and they had to drain the lake and a little piece of his dried hair was sticking up out of the water. IN the end, it turned out that an old man was controlling the "monster" which was actually a huge machine like crane thing the whole time....Does anyone recognize this? even a little bit?

Yep, it's THE QUEST.  It's amazing how often that title comes up in this "please ID movie" threads.  It stars the kid from E.T. if I recall correctly.
