Earlier today, I bought the MGM Midnite Movie DVD of THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES and I was all preped up to see it since I am a Vincent Price fan. Well, I pop that disk in my DVD player and the MGM DVD logo comes up. After that, the menu DOES NOT show up. Instead, I am treated to a blank, black image and that's it.

So, I take it back and get a new DVD of the film. Again, the menu does not show up. I took it back again and got a new replacement. Again, the menu does not show up. So, I took it back and just got my money back.

What do you think? Defective DVD, or something else?

Didn't they have a player they could try it on there? I would think it would be rather strange for an entire run of DVDs to be defective. More likely that you have a picky player that just didn't like those DVDs.

*****  There's nothing strange about whole runs of stuff being defective.  If something is broken in the industrial process, it might not be found until after it has affected hundreds of products.  That items that were produced in the same run were shipped to the same store also is not strange.

I once saw a bunch of Van Halen tapes in the $2 bin at a Tower so I bought one for my car.  The tape itself had the Van Halen album name and songs printed on it.  It looked totally kosher.  I put it in the tape deck and the music on it was a Prince album.  I turned the car around and brought it back to the store.  The girl said all the Van Halen tapes - probably a whole production run - in the $2 bin had the Prince album on it which is why they were in the $2 bin in the first place.  She suggested I keep it as a fun novelty.  I suggested she give me my $2 back.  No offense to Prince but...

Nevertheless, I would try one of these DVDs on another player - or another DVD on your player just to make sure.

Some mgm dvds have problems, I had the jeepers creepers dvd and couldn't get it to work on my toshiba so I contacted them directly since I got jeepers creepers used.  They paid for shipping and sent me a copy of ghost world in exchange.  Pretty good deal if you ask me

I've got the Phibes DVD and it plays ok.

I once worked a record store and a co-worker bought a 4-CD Police boxed set. He opened it right there and NONE of the cd's were in it. Totally empty.

Also, I've seen a guy sell Led Zeppelin II on vinyl at a record show for $200, maybe $400 (I forget), because one side was Zep, the other was Crosby, Stills & Nash.

Some DVDs have problems with some specific players.  Disney's first pressing of Atlantis had issues with several makes and models, but when I called the 1-800 number on the back of the case, they had come up with a list of workarounds for all of the players with issues.  (Mine was stupid -- "go into languages and select English" -- but it worked.)

I had the exact same problem with Disney's "The Kid" starring Bruce Willis.  I rented 2 different copies from 2 different places and all I got was that blank screen.  I later saw it on cable.  It sucked.

Pretty sure it has something to do with your dvd player and not the dvd being defective.

I have that police box set- that's really weird they would send one out with no discs at all.

I had the same issue with my Dead Alive DVD that i bought for 10 bucks.  I tried it onm my DVD player and it didn't work so I used my sister's and it didn't work then I took it back and got a refund. The store just put it back on the shelf.   Then my friend bought it and used it on his DVD player and it worked fine.  I had to buy a new DVD player and a new copy of the movie for 15 dollars more :<
