For the last two years i've notice that in the late 90's horror movies just arn't what they use to be. Most have become lame and boring only remaining as former shells of there father's and grand fathers. But I have seen some Great horror movies and some decent horror movies so i'd thought i'd make a list and see what people thought i'll probably keep updating this because some movies I forget or just don't know what the date of their release was). So here goes: "The best and worst horror movies of the 90's+" (based only on my opionon. No flameing if you disagree please)

Enjoyable: Night of the Liveing Dead (90's of course), Dead Alive, The Blair Witch Project, In the Woods, Dog Soliders, Evil Ed, 8 legged Freaks  .More to come (I'm sure there are some I can't remember right off the top of my head)

Unenjoyable: Jeepers Creepers, Children of the Living Dead, Crocidile 1 and 2, Spiders 1 and 2, Octopus 1 and 2, Night of the Liveing Dead revised (as in the one with added footage) Blair Witch Project 2, The "Scream" Movies, the "I Know What You did Last Summer" movies, Carrie 2. More to come probably.

Maybe it's just me I don't know maybe I'm wrong about horror movies turning awful but i'm just intrested what the rest of you think. I don't mean to offend anyone if I put a movie in the enjoyable/unenjoyable list, so please don't flame me. And also any suggestions , opinions.

In general (other than a rare gem here and there), I think horror movies have fizzled since the 1970s. The demise of the drive-ins had a lot to do with it. Modern horror movies rely too much on CG effects and super-duper-ultra-stereo-digital-mega-subwoofer sound effects. I prefer the classic 35 mm, 87 minute, mono sound horror movies from Italy and Spain, especially the ones from about 1968 - 1976.

I agree with most of your enjoyable/not enjoyable selections, except for JEEPERS CREEPERS. I didn't like it very much the first time I saw it, but I thought it was pretty good the 2nd time around.

Horror sucks today because the film makers are more intrested in making a quick buck.

Horror is never big at the box office, except around Hollaween time.

So to make the horror movies pay off big in the box office, they dumb the story with cartoon like killings and cartoon like killers with cartoon like heros... Scream is a break thru??? Yea, and what was that story about??? [and people say that War of the Robots has no plot...]

I'll probably get booed for this comment (but I know some of you agree with me, even if you don't admit it), Scream was a decent horror film.

At least horror is getting away from the effects driven glop that helped to sink it in the 80s.  Movies like The Blair Witch Project and Below (and others) renew my faith that movies with imagination and character can still be made today.

Home video pretty much killed the drive-in, but the ambience of home viewing is much the same (although not as filled with character).  People lounging on their couches instead of in a car.  But for me, cars are too damn small to go to a drive-in these days.  Besides, all the exploitation movies largely go straight to video anyway.

Skaboi, why should we booed you for that. We have our own opions which we do agree or disagree from time to time.

I like Pieces, Torso, and Mother's Day... but that dosent mean that everybody would agree with me here, either.

Given that it is difficult to get good horror out of hollywood does not mean it's difficult to find some good horror. Hollywood is the essence of mass appeal not quality film making. "The Ring" or its japanesse prepcessor was good, "28 Days Later", "The Cube", only to name a few. Good horror like good anything is something of an effort to find, but it exists and always has... in very small quantities.

All I can say about SCREAM is: "Shame on you, Wes Craven. Shame, shame, shame."

My evidence that the 60s and 70s were better:

 Wes Craven:
***1970s - HILLS HAVE EYES, LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT
***Later - DEADLY FRIEND, SCREAM

Tobe Hooper:
***1970s - TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, EATEN ALIVE
***Later - THE FUNHOUSE, INVADERS FROM MARS

George Romero:
***1960s - NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD
***1970s - MARTIN, THE CRAZIES, DAWN OF THE DEAD
***Later - THE DARK HALF, MONKEY SHINES

Brian DePalma:
***1970s - CARRIE, SISTERS
***Later - RAISING CAIN, BODY DOUBLE

PLEASE NOTE THAT I LEFT OUT SOME GOOD MOVIES THAT THESE DIRECTORS MADE AFTER THE 1970s IN ORDER TO MAKE MY POINT. POLITICIANS USE TACTICS LIKE THIS ALL THE TIME, SO WHY CAN'T I?

BODY DOUBLE was a good movie, kind of datted when you see it today, but where else could you see a movie about a porn movies are like 80's music video.

George Romero: DAY OF THE DEAD was a very bad movie, and that is because he didnt get the budget that was asked for... The remake of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD was 10 times better...
