Fantastic Voyage

I watched my Fantastic Voyage DVD last night and I'm still on the fence about this film's status. I can't decided whether or not this is a serious sci-fi classic or a so bad its good cult classic.

I went for "Classic" categorization. It may look a wee bit silly now, but for its time, it was eye-popping.

Watching it now, the film dated badly.  I can appreciate the film for being different and trying new things, but goodness parts of it will give you a case of the guffaws now.  The sudden "I'm the evil guy" revelation is easy to see coming as well.

I consider this a classic, when it was released the FX were state of the art, this was a movie that I just had to see, couldn't wait for it to come to the local movie house, so when I noticed a novelization of the film in the magazine rack at the market I bought it. Was quite surprised to see it was written by Isaac Asimov, made the movie even more fun to watch, and as an extra bonus, at least for us guys, there was Raquel Welch in a wet suit, for an adolescent boy movies didn't get any better. I know that now with all of us being used to CGI, the film is kind of odd looking, (lets be kind), but it's still a very enjoyable movie and well worth having in your video library.

I know where you're coming from Dennis. Many of us fantasized getting those frozen antibodies off of Raquel.


I would also rate this in the classic category. You can tell they did some work with the science aspects, although even as a kid I thought the little radar dishes were a bit silly.

Not just Racquel in a wetsuit, but Racquel in a wetsuit, screaming incoherently and shaking her rack.   And then all the gropage that occurs when they try to peel the antibodies off.   Oh yeah.

While the film may have dated from the time it was first released, I think at the time it was first released, it was meant to be taken seriously. I will say, that while it has been awhile since I last saw it, and I need to see it again, it is a film I have fond memories of, both from seeing it in the theater and on television.

Fantastic Voyage can be taken seriously....until they are shrunk down and injected into that man's body. The special effects inside the man's body look a bit silly. And it's interesting how when they are shrunk to mircoscopic size, water has the same consistancy as if they were normal size.

But as far as 60s sci-fi films go, I'd Fantastic Voyage was one of the better ones. But there wasn't much competition that decade.

Raquel Welch, she can't sing, she can't act, she can't dance, she might not even be able to cook, but damn she looks good and she does that very very well. Therefore Fantastic Vovage is a classic for no other reason than Raquel Welch in tight cloth and that's enough for me!

Fond mammeries, er, memories here.  It probably doesn't hold up too well, but then most movies from then have less than spectacular FX.  It's probably unique in being an educational sci-fi movie, you can actually learn something about the human body.

The Simpsons'  version is pretty good.
