I have noticed that sometimes I get into certain modes where I can not get movitated to do something unless I have the "white noise" of a movie in the background. To clean my house on a saturday I need to pop in Casino, because it's a guaranteed 3 hours I will be busy doing something, and by the time the film ends the house is near immaculate. I know this whole film by heart so it's a motivator to keep me working.

Anyone else do this? Or should I just save my money for OCD treatment?

OCD man..OCD. ;-)

But if it makes you feel any better I've always had this amusing habit of muting a movie on tv and turning on the radio - I like to see how by coincidence any random song can seem to fit or tell a story of the images i'm seeing on the screen.

Neon Noodle, it's kinda funny you put on Casino if you are doing housework.

I myself enjoy Goodfellas.  Especially during the winter....it's just a winter film.  When I think of Christmas, I think of presents, egg nog, and Henry Hill.

I have problems.

My friends and I always watch Cecil B. DeMented before shooting a short film. Say what you will about the movie, it makes a great rallying cry.

There's also a New Year's Day tradition in my house of watching the live-action Popeye movie. I have no idea why.

I always want to see a Marx Bros. movie on Christmas Eve, especially after 11pm. A&E used to show them then and I got in the habitof associating them with that time of year.

Whenever I'm up late for no reason or am home sick from work I want to watch "Murphy's War" starring Peter O'Toole. That movie is a favorite, but it always seems better if you watch it after 10:30 pm or when you are sick in bed.

On lazy Sunday afternoons, I want to see the Kirk Douglas/Bruce Dern western "Posse" or the Steve McQueen flick "The Reivers". Both are perfect for that time.

Back when I used to brew my own beer, I would always string a cable from the VCR into the kitchen and pop in Strange Brew whenever I was starting a new batch. It set the mood.

When my friends and I were younger, and in the habit of closing down the bar every weekend, we would occasionally get into to mood to come back to my place and watch Smokey and the Bandit. It was perfect for that drunken, somewhat wired, after-the-bar time, when you just don't feel like going home to bed. We'd grab food on the way, then we'd watch until everybody either dozed off or sobered up enough to go home.

I also used to take refuge from relatives by putting in extra work on weekends when we had houseguests. The office is equipped with a little TV/VCR for training videos, so I'd bring a bag of movies, usually including Godzilla.

For pulling an all-nighter at work, The Great Escape was pretty good too.

I have certain "Sunday Night" movies. You know . . . movies that help you end the weekend and prepare to go back to work on Monday morning. Some of my favorites are:

* Any James Bond movie

* THE GREAT ESCAPE

* PAPILLON

* FIDDLER ON THE ROOF

* OLIVER!

* THE TOWERING INFERNO

* THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE

* PLANET OF THE APES

James Bond movies are great for a Sunday night.

I also agree that some movies just feel right if you watch them late. I like Saturn 3 after midnight, with the lights out.

For myself and my wife it tends to be Holiday oriented. We watch the musical 1776 every year on the night before July 4th.
We watch OLIVER! the Wednesday night before every Thanksgiving.
We watch THE EVIL DEAD around Halloween each year.
We watch CHRIST/VISHNU every Saturday before Easter.
We watch STAR WARS, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK and SILVERADO every year on the Sunday between Christmas and New Year's Day.
Twice a year we host Bad Movie Marathons for ourselves and a bunch of our closest friends.
And from late November til Christmas my wife is kind enough to watch EVERY SINGLE one of the literally DOZENS of versions of A CHRISTMAS CAROL that I own with me!

As far as "late" movies, I think Blade Runner fits that bill. The Vangelis score in that movie can cure ANY case of insomnia I ever have.

For the early morning movie (yes, there is such a thing) is Waking Life. you have to have just woken up to truly appreciate it.

Not really that much of a tradition, but for a few years in a row, I watched The Midnight Hour every year near Halloween. It's a made for TV movie and Lifetime used to show it each year. They haven't aired it for a few years now.
