Was recently reminiscing about the time and money I wasted (happily) on video games at the local sub shop when I was in high school. It was the latter part of the 80s, and my favourites included Exciting Hour, R Type, and a couple of others.

There is one, however, that I can picture but not name. It's sort of cartoony. A little knight is with his maiden fair until some flying creature hauls her off. He then proceeds through a series of obstacles, fighting various creatures and, I believe, zombies that pop out of the ground.

What is this game called?

Is this the game you are looking for?  It was nearly full motion video, and a fantastic game as well.

Nope, I remember Dragon's Lair very well. Never played it though. When I say cartoony, I don't mean a real cartoon, but rather that the style of the graphics was more cute than realistic.

My memory is hazy on this, so I'm not completely sure he was a knight. Possibly just a guy with a girlfriend. I could also be mixing two games together, but I don't think so.

YOu may be talking about either Ghouls and Ghosts or Ghosts and Goblins  If this is  the game i think you're talking about it has a knight who if the badguys touch him he strips to his underwear and then he becomes a skeleton after the second hit.  I could never beat that game :<

Will give you an insight as to if this is it or not.

"Ghosts and Goblins"

I got very good at that game until I suddently realized that the game was programming me.   Everything in the game worked in a predetermined way and if I did just the right moves at just the right time, I would advance. The game was programming me to respond correctly and that annoyed me so I stopped playing it

Yep, that's it. I remember the underwear, and the fact that it was the same each time through.

I have Ghost's & Goblins on my Nintendo 8 bit emulator on my p.c. and just played it the other night.
Playing it on a keyboard is so much harder than with a controller.

I also used to have it for my Nintendo when I was a kid.

Man is that game frustrating!

I recall that it was one of the select few that made me angry enough to rip the controller out of its port and throw it across the room.
(When I was a kid mind you!)
I think at one time I even ejected the cartridge from the console and threw IT across the room.

I don't do that anymore!

Sure I know the game. Difficult as hell. You have quite a number of options if you want to play it again in your computer:

1) SNES emulator (Snes9x recommended) and the "Super Ghouls and ghosts" game files. Get both at www.planetemu.net

2) MAME Arcade Emulator and the game files. Check www.mame.dk if you are interested.

Probably there are many, many other versions of the game still floating around, I remember it being a very popular title.

Due to the horrifying nature of this film, no one will be admitted to the theatre.

Yes, both games also came out for the C64 and the Amiga. There's also a version of Ghouls & Ghosts for the Supergrafx, playable on Magic Engine.
