It Happens Every Spring (1949) -- Ray Milland as an overly focused professor who develops a solution that repels wood. He quitely takes a leave of absence and joins a pro baseball team as a pitcher...

Horse Feathers (1932) -- The Marx Bros play gridiron.  Chaos is unleashed.

College (1927) -- Buster Keaton tries out a variety of sports to impress a girl.  Features the rowing boat DAMFINO.  (What it says on the boat.  You picture the reaction when people in theaters read that one out loud.)  See also Harold Lloyd in The Freshman (1925).

And leave us not forget: Sports Goofy.

OH MY GOD!!!

i can't believe i left out Mighty Ducks from that list!!!!

i knew i had neglected a complete sport!  haven't seen slap shot so no comment.

somebody shoot me now!!!  that was a fantastic set of movies, even the third one wasn't too bad [though not exactly life changing]

and yes, BASEketball is a great movie as well

my friends are always shouting:  'your sister's going out with squeek' when they are attempting shots in pool.  more often than not it works, surprisingly enough.
speaking of which [a little dodgy segway here]  the Kiwi movie 'Poolmen' isn't too bad either.

Eight Men Out
Bull Durham
The Natural
Field of Dreams
For Love of the Game

and  *61, the greatest sports flick ever, I got all weepy even though I'm a Braves fan and think the Yanks should(and will) burn in hell.

i read a sci fi short story recently where earth was invaded by aliens.  well in a sense at least.  basically, the aliens gave earth the opportunity to win their freedom back, and earth chose to challenge them to a game of baseball, if we win we are free, if we lose we are all eaten by the aliens.

we lose the series by a run: one player tripped on his shoelaces or something like that.  there's a big 'presentation' where the aliens are going to eat the players of the losing team before they start with the rest of the planet.  a news reporter who has been annoying the team for losing the series is chosen first and gets his nose bitten off, and while the crowd [human mind you] cheers, the aliens spat out the nose and the aliens declare us inedible. the end.

does this have anything to do with earth VS the flying saucers?  if so then it certainly does qualify! :P
sometimes scifi is very silly...

Speaking of BASEketball...

When I was in Adelaide S. Australia in March 2001 I bought that film for "my then" sweetheart Kellie for her birthday.

She loved it!

When she would give me s**t I would say..."well you're a little b***h!"

She'd say, "No I'm not!"  "You couldn't get a chick if you had a $100 bill hanging out of your zipper!"

Then I'd put an Aussie $100 bill in my open zipper and say, "Yeah I could!"

And....well then you can probably imagine what happened next!

Even if the overwhelming moral of the story was "Steroids make you good at football", I'm on your side.  I liked The Program, too.
