Here are the 10 most authentic film westerns of all time, as chosen by the editors of "True West" magazine. By the year that they were released.

1950 Broken Arrow
1953 Shane
1957 Old Yeller
1970 The Ballad of Cable Hogue
1971 McCabe and Mrs. Miller
1972 Bad Company
1972 Ulzana's Raid
1980 The Long Riders
1982 Barbarpsa
1990 Son of the Morning Star

Notable that "Broken Arrow" is included, and the Oscar winning "Dances with Wolves" is not, since they--somewhat--deal with the same subject.

And next week, a fun list, the 10 most inauthentic film westerns of all time, as chosen by the editors of "True West" magazine.

I guess Billy the Kid vs Dracula wouldn't count... (sigh)

Wow, I've only viewed four of these "top ten". These are the ones that I've watched:

1953 Shane
1970 The Ballad of Cable Hogue
1971 McCabe and Mrs. Miller
1980 The Long Riders

I'm going to look into these films as soon a I can:

1950 Broken Arrow
1957 Old Yeller (had seen part of it as a child)
1972 Bad Company
1972 Ulzana's Raid
1982 Barbarpsa
1990 Son of the Morning Star

Statcat "Jesse James Meets Frankensteins Daughter" is the better of the two.  : )

(I think)

Seen eight out of ten, except the first one and the last one.
