I was reading the 1979 Halloween issue of Heavy Metal that I borrowed from one of the guys I work with last night, and there was an excerpt from a story that was advertised as "soon to be a major motion picture from Paramount" called Cry of Cthulhu.  What the hell happened to it?

Never heard of it, and it is not on IMDB. Chances are that the project was abandoned or the article reflected a rumour.

Due to the horrifying nature of this film, no one will be admitted to the theatre.

First I thought this thread would be about HP Lovecraft in music.  Check out the band from BC  called DARKEST OF THE HILLSIDE THICKETS.  Most of thier songs are inspired by Lovecraft. Songs based on Cthulu to From Beyond. Mixed with Starwars references.  In fact one of thier albums was called Cthulu Strokes Back.

It probably didn't get off the ground.  Which is probably just as well.  Lovecraft's track record at the movies is about as bad as Stephen King's

Mystery solved.  Scott from StompTokyo said it got as far as some production design art that was in an old issue of Starlog, but for some reason, I'm guessing money, Paramount dropped it and it was never revived.  Too bad, the story was really cool.

Many books/stories get slated for being made into movies and then disappear. Dune was supposed to be being made into a movie back around 1975 or so. Back in the 1980's, Starlog printed pre-production artwork for the supposedly upcoming Childhood's End movie, based on a book by Arthur C. Clarke.
