CALIGULA (1979) - This film about ancient Rome Directed by Tinto Brass lives up to its reputation. A real story of madness in high places. The film is really produced and directed well. The film is worth a viewing even though the uncut version is very explicit, but it dosen't really distract from the film as it is the story of the film. Also I find it hard to believe after watching the making of this film on the extras part of the DVD that the actors O'Toole, Gielgud, McDowell, and the rest didn't realize how this film was going to turn out after the so called re-editing. The film is much better than Tinto Brass other earlier film SALON KITTY (1976). The film and DVD is a good education in film history in more ways than one.

i saw the uncut version and it left a pretty bad taste in my mouth. also, i thought the set design was awful at times, a long with a lot of the wardrobes and other supossed ancient rome things.

I recently saw Caligula as well, the uncut version.  The film itself was decent, but it could have been considerably better without the porn scenes.  Tinto Brass does still to this day claim that they were put in after editing, but who knows.  It is good to know though that most of the cast still had a career after this film.

Chopper, as for the flick leaving a bad taste in your mouth....I'm sure a few of the actresses could say the same.  :o)

An education in film history ?!

Yeah,I'll say,for it's lucky that it got released on the same year that Michael medved's Golden Turkey Awards book came out, otherwise Mikey would have really had a ball with charistening this Penthouse "classic" as he is joyfully doing at the moment with "Million Dollar Baby"(giving away the tragic ending enough to endure Roger Ebert's loudly heard wrath while inticing moviegoers to frutherly feel like seeing this movie).

Never saw the film, but I remember seeing pictures of the naughty bits in Penthouse back when it came out.

I saw a show about the making of this movie.  It seems that Bob Guccione went in at night, after the regular cast and crew had gone home, to film the extra-naughty bits.  He also had to smuggle those particular feet of film out of France, which has a law protecting the director's view of a film over the producer's.  Bizarro.  Not a pleasant film to watch.

Though I have never seen it, this one always makes me laugh. My younger sister, who at the time (1979) had a thing for all things Roman and for Sir John Gielgud, talked her then boyfriend into taking her to see it. Of course, neither one paid much attention to what type of film it was. And when he found out what they were watching, she had to virtually tie him to his seat to keep him from getting up and walking out in the middle of it, as he was her only way to get back to her college dorm that evening.
