I recently purchased the Millenium season one box set.  I popped in the first DVD, and the FBI warning came on, and the usual disclaimer about "views in the commentary" Then up popped "unable to read disc" on my TV.  Disc 2 had similar results.  I let the player rest overnight and tried it again and got the same exact results. I tried some other DVDS (not in that box set) and they worked perfectly.  So Today (tuesday 2/15) I exchanged the box set for another.

I had them check the DVD while I was at the store. I came home and watched the first episode and all was fine. About 40mins into the second episode, the DVD began to skip, the tracking became weird and the familar phrase "unable to read disc" appeared again.  I then took the DVD out, and put it back in and played that episode one more time, and at that exact spot Got the same results.  I tried 2 different DVDs and all worked fine.

So I need help/suggestions. Is it possible for 2 DVD sets in a row to be defective?
Anyone know of a website where you can check for DVD recalls?

thanks in advance

Although there could be a defect in the DVDs, most likely the problem is in the coding, compression, or layering of the DVD versus how your player does at reading DVDs. Some of the newer DVDs may give older players problems, and some current players as well. You can go to videohelp.com and check your model of DVD player against their compatibility list to see if there are any format problems associated with it. With regard to the DVD set, you can check the customer reviews on Amazon.com to see if anybody has had similar problems. The only place I can suggest for possible known problems wih the DVD set, other than those I have mentioned, is the DVD distributors website. Since I have more than one DVD player, I have had a problem disc on one player that played fine on another. You may want to test the DVD on a friend's player to see how it does on a different machine. If their player does fine with it and you consider getting another machine, I have recommended the Philips model DVP 642 to several members of this board as it can handle DivX, raw MPEG2s, PAL, NTSC, and can hacked for region free operation with a simple code you can enter from your remote; basically meaning that you can play a DVD from any country on it. Well, I have lost my train of thought again, and I hope that I have not put you to sleep. Good luck.
