Stupid fat hobbit...

« on: October 11, 2005, 11:02:54 PM »

What movie is this from?  A bunch of freaks (I think?) all chanting "One of us, one of us" over and over again......

My brain is throwing bits of Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 at me, but that is only cos I watched it the other night, and I'm certain that is not it....

Help - this is driving me mad!

That movie is actually called "Freaks!"  and it's from 1932.

http://imdb.com/title/tt0022913/     There's a link to it on IMDB

Ah, a Tod Browning throwback. Yeah, it's from "Freaks." It's a bizarre little film that casts so called "freaks" into a narrative film and tears the viewer into two directions-- one in favor of the "freaks" for they seem to be exploited in their roles, and one in repulsion of the "freaks" because their characters are so seedy, the story demands it. It's one of the first cases where a movie might be going too far; right on the borderline of exploitation. Some might argue they are being exploited for their appearances, but some other might argue they are just making a living.

Tod Browning had an interesting career where his obsession with the circus bled into his films. After falling in love with a circus performer at the age of 16, he became a stage director and sideshow contributor. He also became involved in film as an actor/director with D.W. Griffith's troupe. If you've ever seen D.W. Griffith's Intolerance, he played the part of a crook. He soon began to direct more independently and his work focused on the morbid and surreal, which took off when his work with Lon Chaney became publicly demanded. Eventually Browning went on to direct the American Dracula 1931 with everyone's favorite Bela Lugosi, and a year later, he directed the aforementioned Freaks in 1932. Browning died in 1962, having made only four movies after Freaks in 1931.

Lagomorphs: menace or underutilized resource?

One more bit of trivia: Part of the freaks' chant became a battle cry for The Ramones: "Gabba Gabba Hey" was their call to join other punk rock "freaks."
