Thunderball Fists?! I can have such a thing?!

WWW
« on: May 23, 2007, 12:38:40 AM »

This hugely unusual mix of suitmation and animation is coming to DVD on June 5th from Televista. There's no info about extras and I can't seem to find much info regarding the aspect ratio or audio used on the disc, but I did find a picture of the horrendous DVD cover art! Looks like I can finally toss out my battered VHS tape of this cinematic oddity.

Yikes! That cover art looks like it was put together by someone using photoshop for the very first time.

I've never seen this movie. My question is: should I?

The FDA has been looking for a generic name for Viagra. After careful consideration by a team of government experts, it recently announced that it has settled on the generic name of Mycoxafloppin. Also considered were Mycoxafailin, Mydixadrupin, Mydixarizin, Dixafix, and of course, Ibepokin.

Yes, you should.  The blend of animation and suitmation is nearly seamless.  To the casual observer, it would appear that the footage is a perfect blend of the two styles.

I think that my nose just grew two feet.

I do have a review for this one.  Oh, did we mention that the two main characters, a brother and a sister, combine into a super powerful hermaphrodite that then defeats the talking dinosaur menace at the end of each segment?

(Another DVD that is a "must have" for me.  Thanks for the heads up, Jordan.)

No problem Andrew!  TeddyR I'm going to order this, along with Classic Media's next two Godzilla DVDs which incidentally come out the same day! (As does the Sergio Leone Anthology! Too many DVDs, so little money!  Bluesad)

My recommendation: Buy it cheap.

Televista/Eurovista releases tend to vary in quality quite a bit from generally good to total crap.  As for extras, judging by some reviews of their past releases and the overall obscurity of this little number I'd say it's safe to assume that there won't be any.

This was one of the reviews (along with the CANE TOADS one) that first drew me to this site. Ever since I first read that review I've been achin' to see this "stupid toy" of a movie.

Definitely goes on my "Must Buy" list.  Thumbup

You really do have quite an eclectic taste in film.  Both of those movies are "must see" movies for people who like strange flicks.

(Yes, I know that saying you have eclectic taste is like the pot calling the kettle black.)

Here's something I hate to admit, but for years most of my film discussion/watching/purchasing/reviewing/etc. centered around films by the likes of Kurosawa, Herzog, Welles, Truffaut, Bergman, Hitchcock (I'll still argue he belongs right up there  with the greats!), Murnau, Von Sternberg, Whale (I'll argue about his place among the greats, too), Dreyer, Lang, Chaplin, Clouzot, De Sica, Tarkovsky, etc., etc., etc. but I've discovered my true love of film began and still centers on the type of movies discussed here. I still can enjoy a good 'serious' film now and then, but these days if it comes down between Kurosawa's RASHAMON and Honda's DESTROY ALL MONSTERS, I'll go for the one with Godzilla.

Random thought: I once really annoyed several people in a on-line discussion about Kurosawa's depression during the seventies when no studio would finance his films by suggesting that maybe he earned money by appearing in some of his buddy Ishirô Honda's movies in the Godzilla suit.

I feel like the parents in the story of the Monkey's Paw. All I can do is fall to my knees, throw my fists to the heavens and cry out "NOT LIKE THIS! NOT LIKE THIIIIIIIIIIIS!"

If all they're gonna do is swap the thing over from VHS to DVD, put some awful box art on it and expect me to cough up $15 for it, I'll stick with the DVD transfer I already put together... this is what happens when you get your hopes up.  Bluesad

I feel your pain Anubis, even more so now that I've purchased the film from Amazon (along with Classic Media's next two Godzilla releases). However, my old VHS is battered and in need of replacing, so I'm not too upset. (Side note: The crappy DVD cover is an actual step above the VHS cover art done by "Quality Video"... amazing but true.)

Is the Quality Video version the one with the t-rex smashing the city and the bad cgi fighter jet is coming in to attack it, or the one with the Biollante-Godzilla-ish looking monster blasting a beam of fire up into the sky? Neither one has anything to do with the movie itself, but they're more "bad" and "cheesy" than "5th Grader using Photoshop" on that DVD.  TongueOut

The cover is the former of the two you mentioned with the T-Rex in the poorly drawn city (Tromaville?!) with an indescribable jet-fighter-thing in the foreground. The other one you mentioned actually looks fairly cool and should have been used for the DVD release. I am curious to see if the cover art matches what is on Amazon.com because the last DVD I purchased there (Tintorera) had different cover art from what was advertised. I guess I will find out in two more weeks.
