we lost Colin Powell to covid

He had an illness that compromised his immune system, and he had been vaccinated.   Very sad news.  We need real men of character like him.

A South African university has now made vaccine jabs mandatory. I wonder what happened to personal freedom which is in our constitution?

Even you don't get a pass on this one, Trevor.

The pandemic has starkly show me how America has gone so far into "neutral selfish" (a term I throw out there for Alex) -- that "individualism" that goes so far that it loses sight of the common good -- that I'm completely fed up with that part of our national identity.   So speaking for *my* country and my own opinion of it (not your country):  part of having liberty involves being educated about the common good and agreeing to surrender some of that up for the common good.

no matter what others may say, the science and numbers are really, really clear on what the common good is here.

It's appropriate for government to mandate this vaccine, for the good of its people, and a less stiff-necked, f**ktard-laden country (speaking of America here) would have a 98+ % vaccination rate already and we'd be done with this and helping the rest of the world out.  Or doing anything else gainful, really, other than maundering in this pandemic as we continue to do.

If your country is moving toward mandating the vaccine, then bravo I say.  My daughter's college sent a message out in late summer basically saying "we do not honor philosophical exemptions.  Get the shot or don't come here."

Even though a vaccine mandate would be the correct move from a public health perspective, I do believe we have to balance personal choice with public health and cannot literally force people to be vaccinated. (Some people, though very few, have a legitimate religious or medical reason to refuse vaccines).

That's not to say we can't incentivize people. You don't want to be vaccinated? Fine. But if so you have to accept the consequences of your choice. You can't attend mass gatherings, can't get a job where you have to work with in close contact with others, can't attend college or other schools in-person. In other words, you're not fully a member of society because you refuse to contribute to the common good.

I feel the question there is, is your personal freedom worth someone else's life. If someone chooses to do something that puts their own life at risk, I have no problem with that. When your freedom puts another life at risk, well that is a totally different proposition.

I'm anti-mask - because of my crippling anxiety issues and wearing a mask doesn't help - but I do wear one in public. I'm also not mad about needles and injections but I've had my jab. This is just to keep others safe, not me.

That's not what "anti-mask" means here in America. Anti-maskers are people who believe that requiring masks to be worn in public is, basically, as bad as the Holocaust.

Wow: then I guess I'm really not anti-mask then.  Smile

I just can't feel bad for the people who passed from covid because they were too stupid to get vaccinated

Somebody with COVID seriously needs to cough on you repeatedly.

Good job he is already vaccinated then.

That worked so well for Colin Powell, didn't it?
