42ND STREET FOREVER, VOL 1 - 3 Slimes

Capsule Review:

This is a trailer compilation. The great thing about cult film trailer collections is that you can watch them in small increments, or just run the whole thing to bask in hours of absurdity. Sometimes, you even discover films that somehow slipped under your radar, like I did when I watched the trailers for "Ginger" and "Raiders of Atlantis."

This collection seems to concentrate heavily on the lurid and sexual, and I tend to enjoy a more balanced platter. Give me trailers from ridiculous action movies, martial arts flicks, raunchy exploitation films, space operas, cheesy horror flicks, foreign film oddities, and absolutely do not forget the cheapo monster movies. "42nd Street Forever, Volume 1" is predominantly trailers that are long on the sex (yes, John Holmes appears in some), including at least two promotional spots for 3D porn movies.

Not certain if I would see a 3D porn movie in a theater; if I did, I imagine that my seat of choice would be in the very back row. Do not get me wrong, there were some great trailers that showcased some attractive women doing what women do in exploitation films. There were also a few instances of my personal nemesis: naked man ass (and the other, floppier side).

Thankfully, The Green Slime makes an appearance, as does Destroy All Monsters (the latter seeming horribly out of place here). "The Pink Angels" looks astounding, because the plot involves a male motorcycle gang with feminine flair. "Shocking Asia" did shock me - I prefer to be warned before Asian ladyboys start dancing around in their birthday suits, but the geisha palace and sex museum offset that a bit.

Watching the trailer for Welcome Home Brother Charles, I was mystified why they revealed everything else, but failed to use what has to be that film's biggest lure: the protagonist employs his manhood like a python to choke his enemies to death. Starcrash's trailer was great, and it was even ballsy enough to show the "torpedoes" crashing through the windows of Count Zartharn's space fortress (man, I love that movie).

Many of the trailers for crime and action movies were a bit tepid and confusing, despite some great titles. What guy could resist paying a buck for the chance to watch "The Bullet Machine?"

Things I Learned From This Movie:

Green Dot People with sensitive dispositions would be happier if they were blind.
Green Dot Head wounds bleed profusely, especially those caused by shotguns.
Green Dot Sylvester Stallone will do anything for a cheeseburger.
Green Dot Every woman in Africa has the exact same pair of breasts.
Green Dot If you are going to plunder, pillage, and rape a neighboring town, you might as well design your battering ram to look like a penis.
Green Dot It is hard to get a word in edgewise against a submachine gun.
Green Dot Europeans love anybody with "Hoff" in their name.
Green Dot Australopithecus' extinction was caused by the Iron Age.
Green Dot In the beginning, Rome was a complete sausage fest, and I don't mean bratwurst.

Stuff To Watch For:

Green Dot 4 mins - Calm down there, missy. All she wants to do is give you a massage...and he just wants to watch.
Green Dot 18 mins - Ahhhh! Didn't need that!
Green Dot 29 mins - "Dude, if you try to cut in front of me, I am going to chop it off."
Green Dot 45 mins - What the? Stop that, you little degenerates!
Green Dot 70 mins - Apparently these nuns also took a vow to abstain from razors and bikini waxes.
Green Dot 73 mins - Here is a camel butt, which is actually less hairy than some of the other butts we have been exposed to.
Green Dot 78 mins - Ahhhh! Didn't need that either!
Green Dot 100 mins - This is why my "battle bus" design includes steel spikes on the roof.
Green Dot 113 mins - I have no idea what this movie is about, and I am not sure that watching the actual film would help.

Quotes:

Night of Bloody Horror: "Keep telling yourself: it's only a picture."

Ginger: "Her weapon is her body."

Wicked Wicked: "In Duovision. A new experience to dazzle and challenge your imagination!"

The Pink Angels: "They rode a lonely road marked 'detour' through a straight world."

Teenage Mother: "Where is your daughter tonight? This is the story of a girl who wasn't careful. 'Teenage Mother' means nine months of trouble."

The Bullet Machine: "An ex-cop tangles with an ex-hooker. They're into...MURDER."

Volume 2 is more evenly balanced than Volume 1.

I've one of these type of sampler/trailer DVD's by Something Weird called The Extra Weird Sampler that I bought at Best Buy one day for only 3.99.

It's got a little over 4 hours of stuff on it and much like the one reviewed here focuses on 60's nudies and 70's sexploitation flicks.

Usually in most cases the trailers are 100 times more entertaining than the actual films themselves.

Pretty funny stuff though.  I'll have to check this 42nd Street Forever, Vol. 1 at some point.

I'm now on a hunt to find a copy of The Bullet Machine, because as you said, who doesn't want to watch a movie called "The Bullet Machine"? Even better? According to IMDB an alternate title for it is Harry and the Hookers. I'd take either title if anybody knows where I can find it! TeddyR

At

brainsonfilm.com

they have a review of The Pink Angels.

I thought I'd see the 3 (?) Ginger movies reviewed there too, but I don't see them now. It's a good bad movie site, BTW.

I used to rent a trailer compilation VHS called "The Best of Sex and Violence!" from my local Hastings all the time when I was a kid.  It is another great trailer compilation you should review Andrew.  It was hosted by none other than DAVID CARRADINE... yep!  Bill... and included many favorites like the soft porn version of Cinderella (which, BTW was the inspiration from the hard rockin' 80's hair band).  It also introduced me to the wonder that is Dolemite.

This review reminds me of that.... looks interesting.  Think I'll check it out.  Thanks and love your site.

My favorite badmovie of all time?  Hawk the Slayer!

My bad... it wasnt hosted by mr. KUNG FU himself, but rather by his dad... I believe his name is Keith Carradine.  I do know that if you can stand to watch to the end, though, you will see David and the other son--the Revenge of the Nerds guy-- show up.

You might be thinking of The Bad Movie Report ( http://www.stomptokyo.com/badmoviereport/ )  Dr. Freex was quite fascinated by the Ginger trilogy. (man I miss that guy, he was my 2nd favorite bad movie reviewer, but at least his old reviews are still there.)

I also miss Dr. Freex's reviews.  He had a knack for making me laugh out loud; it was just the way he approached the films and how they mattered to him.

John Carradine.  His ability to deliver serious sounding technobabble was incredible, but man did he appear in some awful films.  "Billy the Kid vs. Dracula" was just one of the real stinkers.

"The Best of Sex and Violence" was a title I ran across a few months ago, probably around the time I developed a renewed interest in trailer compilations.  I definitely want to see it.  Unfortunately, it does not appear to be available on DVD, so I'm stuck waiting for the next legitimate release.

Something Weird's collection seems to mostly consist of sleazy exploitation films.  Everything is amazingly low budget, and has nudity or depraved sexuality.  Nice snag on the sampler, I had a copy, but it went MIA.  Think that I paid about $20 for mine.  I see it's selling for $5 on Amazon.com now.  Going to have to pick up another copy.

Volume 2 is more evenly balanced than Volume 1.

Still have not seen Vol. 2, but it's on my list.  Vol. 3 also seemed more balanced than this one.  However, the highs of Vol. 3 also seemed less dramatic.  Nothing peaked my interest quite as much as the titles that cropped up on Vol. 1.
