TROLL - 1 Slime
Rated PG-13
Copyright 1985 Atar Productions Inc.
Reviewed by Andrew Borntreger on 'a long time ago'

The Characters:

Green Dot Harry Jr. - Noah Hathaway! (Atreju from "The NeverEnding Story.") Young lad who loves b-movies, but is mortally afraid of his sister.
Green Dot Wendy - Harry's sister, she spends most of the film locked in a magical prison while the Troll uses her form as a disguise.
Green Dot Eunice St. Clair - June Lockhart! (The younger version is her daughter, Anne Lockhart.) Ancient sorceress and protector of the human realm, turned into a talking tree stump for a while.
Green Dot Malcolm - Phil Fondacaro! The only person shorter than Wendy, dying of Leukemia until the Troll transforms him into an elf.
Green Dot Harry Sr. and Anne - Michael Moriarty is the father! Harry and Wendy's parents who wish everyone would just act normal.
Green Dot Peter - Sonny Bono! A self described swinger who hates children, he's the first one turned into a troll. (One with the woodlands...)
Green Dot Bill and Jeanette - She is none other than Julia Louis-Dreyfus! The Troll makes her into a forest nymph and him into something suitably slimy.
Green Dot Barry - He used to be a Marine, of course he still wears dark sunglasses, brass belts, and green t-shirts. Turned into a troll.
Green Dot The Troll - Magical creature who wishes to repopulate the world with elves, fairies, and such.

The Plot:

There are so few opportunities to watch Julie Louis-Dreyfus run around wearing ivy (And only ivy.) that you have to take notice of this film. When the Potters move into a new apartment they never dream what will happen next, their daughter Wendy is soon replaced by a malevolent troll! The capricious creature enjoys confusing Harry or Anne with strange antics, almost to the point of neglecting it's true goal. Slowly and surely it uses a magical ring to turn the other apartments into magical forests, each one populated by the transformed inhabitants. Harry Jr. takes pains to avoid his sister, mainly since she is beating him up, (Really not good for the budding male psyche - getting thrown around by your little sister.) so he befriends Eunice. She gives him a magical spear to defeat the Troll's minions, good thing since she fares poorly against them. In a bizarre twist ending the Troll foils his own plans, plunging the magical spear into the guardian beast to save Wendy's life. There is even one more twist ending involving a police officer and the laundry room, but we won't go into that. A final word in the movie's defense: there are lots of sock puppets, you have to love sock puppets...

Things I Learned From This Movie:

Green Dot Sonny Bono looks quite natural in a wife beater t-shirt.
Green Dot Modern parents have problems dealing with kids who watch Godzilla movies.
Green Dot The late and great Mr. Bono was terrible in bed.
Green Dot Loud music only affects plates.
Green Dot Midgets don't like chocolate milk.
Green Dot Puberty changes the way a boy knocks, in addition to his voice.
Green Dot Julia Louis-Dreyfus is really a dryad.
Green Dot Old women are confusing. Old women carrying spears are confusing and dangerous.
Green Dot Apartment buildings make excellent greenhouses.

Stuff To Watch For:

Green Dot Opening Credits - Charles Band, with a budget no less, oh hell...
Green Dot 7 mins - Yes, yes, we notice the ring.
Green Dot 11 mins - This is a mad house! A mad house!
Green Dot 28 mins - What did I do to deserve this scene?
Green Dot 32 mins - Harry Jr. has a pretty fruity room for a teenage male.
Green Dot 37 mins - So trolls just sit around singing all day?
Green Dot 45 mins - How exactly does that little mushroom thing get around?
Green Dot 59 mins - He actually made Malcolm shorter, now that is powerful magic.
Green Dot 71 mins - Talk about anti-climatic battles.

I couldn't help but notice that one of the pictures from the film is none other than Michael Moriarty of 'Law & Order' fame. I think he also starred in 'Return to Salem's Lot' and 'It's Alive 3'. Go Figure.

It's one of thoes classic "It's so bad it's good"
movies. I saw this on Monstervision a few years
back. It was high comedy to watch TV has beens
like Gary Sandy(who plays the right wing nut) and
Brad Hall(who plays Julia-Louise husband in the
movie and in real life) in this film. Am I the
only one who though JLD was kinda hot when she was
prancing around in the forrest as the nymph?
Man,why did MST3K never do thi

Admittedly I'm a fan, but I think Noah Hathaway is the only one doing any actual acting -- the others appear to be wishing they were somewhere else. Further, what I find interesting is that, although Noah's name is first as the opening credits scroll by, his name is nowhere to be found on the VHS tape box.

Ok, I haven't seen the movie but I watched that little clip of the "Troll Chorus" and honestly, I don't think I'd live through the opening credits of this one!

Troll is such a great classic scary childrens' flick, it shouldn't be rediculed whatsoever for its old-style mid-eighties film-making techniques.  Sure, this was 1985...and what did Troll have to live up to besides the Goonies and Ferris Bueller's Day Off?  It was a task in itself to create the plant animation near the end (compare this animation, if you will, to the basic clay/wire structure animation like in the film "Clash of the Titans")  Anyway, what it comes down to is this:  When you're five, six, seven or so years old, this is THE scariest movie you can watch.  I was five when this film came out on HBO.  I taped it.  I am not so sure that in this day of computer animation and advanced film-making techniques, Troll would make such an impression on any child, however, in the 1980s this would surely induce rash nightmares and fears in the minds of any youngster.  Another fact remains that the acting techniques of these actors (and I do agree they do not seem to want to commit to the film's success at all in the movie), yes, these actors' techiniques I should say, are not noticable and the smallest flaw would never be noticed by a youngster who is caught up in the film's dramatics (trolls, plants overtaking modern complexes, midgets).  I am certain this film would be a seller for DVD production.  Look into it.

Review first posted on 9 December 2001. This documentary chronicles yet another ecological disaster that man has visited upon Australia, but it makes me laugh.
