| We begin with Angus excavating ancient ruins in Mary and Eve's backyard just as he makes a bewildering discovery. In addition to the structural remains of a nunnery and a Roman temple he finds a large skull, vaguely reptilian in form. Only later, at one of Lord D'Ampton's parties, does he learn about the Legend of the White Worm.
The worm is not only a legend and Lady Sylvia is picking out the annual virgin sacrifice for her pagan deity. Eve's mysterious status as an unsullied lass of almost thirty puts her at risk of becoming worm food. Only heroic efforts by the men folk (and a hand grenade) prevent her consumption.
The film is riddled with revolting erotic images and snake references. I really didn't need to watch a confusing dream sequence involving nuns being raped by Roman soldiers, though later another vision showing them impaled on stakes is equally twisted. There is also the human sacrifice ritual, apparently Lady Sylvia uses a spearlike strapon to commit the deed. Try to remember these are intended to portray the depravity of the White Worm and do so rather well. Meanwhile the protagonists use every trick in the book against snakes to combat Lady Sylvia, including snake charming music and a mongoose. You have to feel sorry for the mongoose, in this case the little hunter was in over its head.
Hugh Grant encountering a pagan snake god is pure entertainment, plus the story was inventive and well paced. Is it frightening? Well no, but it did not bore me and was a welcome "alternative vampire" sort of story.

Man, oh man, I love that song. I wish I could buy it. I have only seen this movie on the Sci-fi channel, where the mentioned scenes with raped and impaled nuns are cut out. I also don't remember the dream sequences. However, they did leave in the Strap-On-Of-Death.

Snakes and Ladders is actually the original name of Chutes and Ladders. In its original British incarnation. A friend of mine from England actually has a Snakes and Ladders game from when he was a child (FAR pre-dating this film). Just a nitpicky little commment here.
I found this film wonderfully fun.

Oh boy--Ken Russell finally makes it to Badmovies.org! I, alas, have not seen this film, but I really look forward to the Good Sgt's reviews of Lisztomania and The Devils!

I'd have to give this one 4 slimes. Hugh Grant swinging the broadsword and falling into the drumset is pure brilliance. Can't forget the White Worm song, either. I want the soundtrack.

KidJustice, if you will go to www.geocities.com/lairof/, you will find the lyrics to the song, which is called "The D'Ampton Worm." There it says that the song is performed by Emilio Perez Machado and Stephen Powys, but, I have also heard that the song is performed by The Pogues. I do not know where you can find a recording of the song, but I have heard it is used as the background music for the film trailer. If so, that can be found at www.vidnet.com and www.horrordvds.com/downloads/. You need RealPlayer to see the first and DivX to see the second. Now, now a criticism, but an observation about our webmaster, who ". . .really didn"t need to watch . . . nuns being raped by Roman soldiers," but, he doesn't say anything about not needing to watch a young boy scout, being seduced, then emasculated, before being murdered by being drowned in the bath by the villainess. Hmmm! As a boy scout for an year in the 5th grade, this scene and the scene of the death of the four boy scouts in "Cemetery Man," makes me think that he has something against the boy scouts. Anyway, a great site. Who would have thought a marine had a sense of humor, and an eye for picking out the best scene in a film, including the two scenes mentioned, 77% of the time. |

There is some debate as to whether Kevin, the goofy boy scout, in this film actually received a blowjob from Lady Sylvia, before she emasculated him. At www.geocities.com/lairof/, the webmaster says no to both the blowjob and the emasculation. (Check the bulletin board at the site listed.)
