The Characters:

  • Joe Armstrong - Michael Dudikoff! All American hero who spends most of the film with no lines.
  • Jackson - Steve James! Although he is a well respected martial artist, he fails to see the bad scripting and wooden acting.
  • Sergeant McDonald - Larry Poindextor! Plays an Army sergeant who shouts at everything, including the dumbed down plot line
  • The Lion - Gary Conway! Some drug dealer who wears white suits with bad toupees.
  • Everyone else seems to be rejects from an old Star Trek film, because they are red shirt ensigns.

The Plot:

The movie centers around a small Caribbean island where US Marines are 'becoming lost' - kidnapped by men in black suits. Fortunately, two American military men are there to help (Dudikoff and James), they find out that ninja are kidnapping these Marines to an unknown island, and soon try to go to the island, only to be double-crossed by some US Marines.

When they return Dudikoff and James befriend a lady whose father (a brilliant scientist) has also been kidnapped to the same island. Soon they find out that a powerful drugs baron who's rollin' in money decides to extend his power by making genetically engineered super ninja.

By this point, I lost what was happening to the film, it became far too stupid - ninja aren't born, they are taught the art. Which genes are the ninja ones? It gets even sillier when we are told that they are going to use metal instead of bones.

Every ninja you see gets their butt kicked in one way or another, even the drug baron's henchman gets his ass kicked - and very easily... ...why did they even bother with this crappy film I have no idea.

The ninja employed by drug barons could have been better done as well as the overall plot line.

The end is of course a massive explosion on the island.

Things I Learned From This Movie:

  • There is a ninja gene.
  • If you want to create a band of super ninja from ninja genes you have to kidnap US Marines.
  • Yelling to a ninja to "stay down" during a fight usually works.
  • Getting cut across the stomach with a samurai sword doesn't hurt as much when you have a piece of rope in your mouth.
  • Walking between two large boulders on a remote island full of ninja is not a good idea
  • Ninja always attack from large boulders.
  • Ninja are ridiculously easy to beat.
  • Ninja are red shirt ensigns, literally.
  • The US Army always investigates things to do with the US Marines, and vice versa.
  • Drug lords always wear white suits.
  • A very small amount of explosives and chemicals will blow up a huge warehouse and its entire contents.
  • In order to go undercover, the Army dresses as Marines.
  • Dudikoff looks far better in a Marine uniform than he does in a Army uniform.
  • Praying/meditating in a certain way produces a gunpowder-type explosion in front of you.
  • Genetic Scientists rant on about ethics, yet are very happy to use explosives and volatile chemicals.
  • The US Marines are populated with party crazy teenagers.

Stuff To Watch For:

  • The fight sequence where Steve James yells to a ninja to stay down
  • And that's about it really, the end fight sequence is just lame.

The American Ninja series are some of my favorite bad movies of all time.  I love Michael Dudikoff and Steve James (RIP), those two are so bad they rule!  If you love those two as much as I do, check out the film Avenging Force, it also stars the doofy duo!  Anybody who doesn't see the humor in bad movies like American Ninja is out of their minds.

"Your wrong. Ninjas knew deadly styles of hand to hand combat known as Tai Jutsu. They learned this in first 3 sets of 9 sets style. The last would go into internal martial arts.knowing what you're opponent does or will do, by predicting or other things I forgot I read. They were raised since childhood as Ninjas and practised or were brought up that way. The Sumury greatly feared them and they were known as the ultimate warriors. They were like assasins with absolutly no fear or remourse for their life or anyone elses. You should read "Ninja: And their secret fighting style" by Stephen Hayes (sp?). "

No offense intended, but when you can't spell SAMURAI correctly I find it difficult to take your posts seriously.  No where did I not say ninja were not well-trained.  However, there was no real organized school for ninja training - it was much more vague and amorphous then that.  It's like saying hitman, that's the closest to modern terminology, though it doesn't really apply to a ninja.  Yes, there are hitmen who are extremely good, perhaps even a few who could be comparable in skill to the best of our special forces, but they're the exceptions, not the rule.  And yes, there are hitmen who are extremely well trained in schools of sorts - just like some ninja no doubt were.

Many ninja were basically civilians who did it for extra money, or for other reasons.  Some were permenantly hired by local warlords - those were in all likelihood the most elite of the ninja.  The samurai would not fear a ninja, especially in a fair fight - a typical samurai sword will literally cut a ninja blade in half.  Their weapons had very different functions, and their roles were very different.  Samurai could not assassinate, for instance.

Don't forget - samurai swords are essentially the best made swords around.

And yes, I know this will never be read and I'm a year late.  Oh well.

My God People! Anyone who classes this movie as action is missing the point entirely... This film is a slapstick comedy with some of the greatest B (or maybe C) class acting.  Why is anyone taking this movie seriously? I just don't understand.  Steve James is a hero who is so obviously crappola at Martial Arts and the more rigidly chorepgraphed his fights are the better... You can practically see him mouthing instructions to his fighting partner!

And hey Eric... ur right Avenging Force does star the above two (the Laurel & Hardy of B Cinema), however this movie really does suck as there just isn't enough of Steve James beatin the s**te outta people.  You wanna check out a great Steve James movie... have a look at Riverbend. Absolutely Classic.

Well, some of the fights were better coreagraphed than in the first one, but somehow they were worse shooted/directed/edited/whatever (specially the fight at the beach):P And the final fight with the ninja boss/henchman was kinda short, and lame. That guy looked very good in a previous scene in the bar, were he kicks the living crap out of of a punk who touches his shoulder, they could have made a better fight at the end.
Anyway, Steve James shines in his fights, has more of then, and altough a couple look a bit rigid, they're very very cool, probably the best of the whole movie. :)
The plot was ludicrous, Dudikoff didn't move as well as in the first one, but still a very enjoyable flick :D

Greetings from argentina! :P

It's Corny, but that's what makes it fun to watch.  It's still one of my favorites of the series.

Hey, Reply #10...

No offense intended, but when you can't spell SAMURAI correctly I find it difficult to take your posts seriously.

...maybe you should check your OWN spelling and grammar before you go busting on someone else's. It's "You're," not "Your." It's "Assassins," not "Assasins."

In any case, yes, American Ninja movies are BAD (as in, awful). But they're GREAT in their badness. It's completely silly and ridiculous...but it's a movie, meant to entertain and not meant to be taken seriously. If you take this movie (or any other for that matter) seriously, get help.
